Meet Sergio at Aurora House

Sergio has worked as part of the Aurora House Team since November 2015 after relocating from Portugal. We took the opportunity to speak with Sergio to find out how his first few months had been at Mentaur.
November seems like a long time ago now! How have you found your first few months at Mentaur?
It’s certainly been challenging! I’ve had to get used to a new country, with a very different environment and culture whilst starting a brand new job! But I wouldn’t change it for the world; I feel very lucky to be working with such a lovely group of people, all working hard to deliver an exceptional level of care.
What have you learnt so far?
The nature of the care industry is very different in Portugal, so I’ve learnt plenty! Taking on this role has led me to the biggest learning curve of my career, and I’ve really enjoyed learning something new and developing my skills.
How have you found working at Aurora House?
It has been absolutely fantastic. Everyone at Mentaur has made it possible for me to face the new challenges in this role head on. I know I can ask any question or ask for help at any time and someone will always be there to support me. From the moment I started my new role at Mentaur I’ve wanted to develop professionally and with hard work and the support of the team around me I’ve already been promoted; I’m now a Senior Support Worker and I’m really enjoying the new responsibilities of the role. I know if I keep doing my best and working hard there’s no reason why I can’t continue to grow my career here at Mentaur.
What’s it like living in Bedford after moving from Portugal?
I’m originally from Lisbon, so it’s been interesting getting used to living in a much smaller town! But I love it; It’s nice to live somewhere where everything is in walking distance and Bedford itself is a lovely place to live in. Of course there are differences; I do sometimes miss in particular the weather and the food in Portugal, but I’ve already made lots of friends, plus there is a thriving Portuguese community in Bedford, so really, it does feel like a home from home!
What would you say to someone who might be considering a career at Mentaur?
My only regret is that I didn’t come to the UK and to Mentaur sooner. Yes, it has been a big step for me and it was a bit nerve-wracking at times in the beginning, but now I feel very happy, very privileged and very lucky to be working for a well-respected and growing company, playing my part in supporting the people in our care to more independent living. Mentaur have offered excellent training and development opportunities to me and from day one I have always felt very welcome as part of the team. I’d certainly advise those seeking a career in care to apply for a job at Mentaur!
